How to Add Chroma Key in Alight Motion?

To add a chroma key effect in Alight Motion, follow these steps.

  1. Import Your Video: The first step is to open Alight Motion and create a new project by selecting the “Create New Project” option. Choose your desired project resolution and frame rate. Once your project is created, tap the “+” icon at the bottom left of the screen to import the video file that has the green screen or another color background you want to remove. This could be a video you’ve already recorded with a green screen setup or any other footage that uses chroma keying.
  2. Add a Layer for the Chroma Key: After importing your video, the next step is to add the chroma key effect to the video layer. In the Alight Motion timeline, you will see the video layer you just added. Tap on the layer to select it. If you’re planning to replace the background with a new one, you should import the new background as well by tapping the “+” icon and selecting an image or video you want to use behind your subject. This background layer will be placed below the video layer in the timeline to create the proper layering effect.
  3. Apply the Chroma Key Effect: With your video layer selected, tap on the “Effects” section found in the layer properties menu. This will open the effects options available in Alight Motion. Scroll through the list and select the “Chroma Key” effect. Chroma keying is a technique used to remove a specific color (commonly green or blue) from the video, which can then be replaced with another background. Once selected, the chroma key effect will automatically apply to your video layer, and the background will start to disappear as the software begins analyzing the selected color to remove.
  4. Adjust Chroma Key Settings: After applying the chroma key effect, Alight Motion provides you with several customization options to fine-tune how the background is removed. The most important setting is the “Key Color,” where you can select the color of the background you want to eliminate (typically green for green screen footage). You’ll see a color picker that allows you to select the exact shade of green or blue. The “Tolerance” slider controls how much of the selected color range is removed. Increasing the tolerance will remove a broader range of colors, but it might affect your subject’s edges. The “Edge” slider lets you adjust the softness of the edges of your subject, helping to reduce harsh outlines and making the transition to the new background smoother. You can also tweak the “Shadow” and “Opacity” settings if necessary to make the keying effect more accurate.
  5. Preview and Adjust: Once you have made your adjustments, it’s important to preview your video to ensure the chroma key effect is working properly. Tap the play button in the preview window to see how the video looks with the background removed and replaced by your chosen background layer. If the subject looks jagged or the background isn’t completely removed, you may need to adjust the chroma key settings further, especially the “Tolerance” and “Edge” sliders. Sometimes, subtle tweaks in the key color or fine-tuning the edges will provide better results, depending on the quality of the footage and the background color.
  6. Finalize and Export: After you’ve successfully applied the chroma key effect and are happy with how the background is replaced, you can finalize your project. Tap the export icon located at the top-right corner of the screen to begin the export process. You will be prompted to choose your desired export settings, such as resolution, frame rate, and file format. Once the settings are selected, tap “Export” to save the video. The app will process the video, and you’ll be able to share it or save it directly to your device.

By following these steps, you can easily remove the background from your video and replace it with any background of your choice, creating professional-looking results with Alight Motion.
